Abou Diaby broke and dislocated his ankle in 2006 and has since then failed to live up to the initial promise he had shown while sporting the red and white of Arsenal when he first arrived from Ligue Un side Auxerre. It was argued that part of that was down to Gunners chief Arsene Wenger continuing to play Diaby wide on the left, much to the annoyance of many an observer last season.

In one game he had nearly 80 touches of the ball, and ALL of them were with his right foot. This led to outrageous accusations that he was a peg-legged pirate but pub talk aside it seemed his left stick was used for standing, stretching and nothing else.

Wenger persisted with flanking the Frenchman though with the intention that his left foot would eventually become acquainted with a ball and who knows, they might even get along, flirt a little, then one day once they've got past the awkward thoughts from the first few dates, Abou's left leg could even become an attractive magnetic force for these plastic spheres that had only gotten into bed with his right.

With the departure of key midfielders Aliaksandr Hleb, Mathieu Flamini, and Gilberto, the onus was on Denison, Song Billong, and Abou Diaby to provide Arsenal's central areas with a title-contending partnership to the roaming quarterback Francesc Fabregas.

Since shaking off his niggling injuries Diaby made his first notable appearance in a Gunners shirt on Tuesday evening's festival of end to end football. Fenerbahce and Arsenal crossed swords in the Champions League and while there was a notable performance from captain for the night Manuel Almunia, who came out on top during countless one on one clashes, it was Diaby who stood out most with a fine display of skillful footwork, clever forward play, and being a constant menace to the Fener defence.

His dribbling was inspired, he got round players with his right and left, and he filled the role behind the forward with ease. He looked not only fresh, but skillful.

The analogies with former leggy Frenchman Patrick Vieira have gone on for long enough. Diaby is not the man to sit in front of a defence. The thought of a tall and silky forward who could not only flick you out the way should he so desire, but with ball at his feet too, is enough to haunt an established Premier League defence, so by pulling him back further down the field will only limit his attacking prowess.

He played just behind Manu Adebayor in a 4-5-1 formation that has done Arsene Wenger well down the years, and will likely keep that place for away games in Europe, and the bigger domestic games in England.

Diaby's renaissance though is testament to Wenger's coaching skills. Twelve months ago he couldn't hit a barn door with a beach ball with his left, and would have likely just lashed at air. Now, in a hostile atmosphere in Turkey he has ruined a team with that same peg. Kudos must go to player and coach for keeping at what had been deemed a long lost cause.

LONDON - FORMER Tottenham boss Juande Ramos has admitted the loss of strikers Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov contributed to his downfall, according to the Spaniard's website on Tuesday.

'The exit of Berbatov and Keane, important for their human qualities and scoring ability, was too hard a blow for the squad,' he said of the pair who netted 90 goals in their two seasons together.

Ramos, 55, left the club on Saturday after Spurs' worst-ever start to the season left them anchored to the bottom of the league.

That was quickly followed by news that Portsmouth coach Harry Redknapp would be taking the vacant post.

Ramos, who won the Uefa Cup with Sevilla in two successive seasons (2006 and 2007), had only been in the job for a year, but steered Spurs to a League Cup win last year - their first silverware since 1999.

'I want to express my enormous gratitude to the Spurs fans for their excellent welcome, their respect, their kindness and even their constructive criticism,' said Ramos, who replaced Dutchman Martin Jol last October.

'They have made me happy for many months and I'm only sorry I haven't been able to offer them more great evenings like the League Cup win at Wembley.'

During the summer, Keane joined Liverpool and Berbatov went to Manchester United for a combined total of more than 51 million pounds (S$121 million).

The Spaniard splashed out 14 million pounds on Roman Pavlyuchenko and also brought in David Bentley, Luka Modric and Giovani Dos Santos.

'The young age of some of the signings, despite their quality, means they needed some time to adapt and mature, which because of the urgency of the competitions they have not yet been awarded,' said Ramos.

'All this triggered a situation which I hope will be turned around as soon as possible because the club and fans deserve it.'

Spurs posted their first victory this season on Sunday against Bolton, thanks to goals from Pavlyuchenko and Darren Bent.

But Ramos recalled the happier times of last year.

'We also achieved the difficult challenge of lifting a title, which, after nine years without tasting success, was an enormous joy for all the club and the fans.

'For this, we can catalogue last season as tremendously successful.'
