Arsene Wenger has backed reserve keeper Lukasz Fabianski and the rest of his young Arsenal team to rise to the challenge when they take on Partizan Belgrade in what is set to be a highly-charged Champions League encounter in Serbia.

The Gunners were shell-shocked by their home Barclays Premier League defeat to West Brom on Saturday, where they had trailed 3-0, and now must look to get their season back on track with a positive result in one of the most intimidating atmospheres in European football.

Partizan may have come through three rounds of qualifying to reach the group stages, but the Belgrade side are in good form, with five wins from six to top their domestic table.

Wenger, though, maintains lessons have been learned from what was an abject display against the Baggies.

''The disappointment was very deep, but we can learn from what has happened to us,'' said Wenger.

''We realise that we need to be focused in every single game, produce performances in every single game and that is what I believe we have learnt from Saturday.

''I believe in the intelligence of my group players and I have no doubt in their talents.

''We will be highly motivated and will try to redress what was not right on Saturday.''

Manuel Almunia - who made a number of errors - picked up an elbow injury in that game which opens the door for Fabianski.

Wenger continued: ''For Fabianski, it is another big chance - but you want a goalkeeper or any player to grab the chance when you get it.

''As a manager you can give a chance to a player who is good enough and I believe in his talent.

''He gets another opportunity to show how good he is. I want him to show how good he is.''

Stadion FK Partizan will be at boiling point come kick-off, as 'The Gravediggers' look to extend Arsenal's record of failing to win away in the Champions League since last September.

The Serbians, though, have something of a chequered history of crowd trouble and were thrown out of the 2007/08 UEFA Cup for clashes in a qualifying tie against Zrinjski Mostar - while in September last year, a Toulouse fan died in hospital after being injured following violence in a bar ahead of the two sides' Europa League tie.

Indeed, Partizan went as far as issuing a plea for calm on their own website, declaring ''this is our chance to wipe out ugly traces of the recent past and we shouldn't miss this opportunity''.

Wenger, though, is confident the game can pass without incident.

''We are always inside the stadium, so I do not know what is happening outside, I leave that to UEFA and to the Serbian authorities. I am sure they will do that very well,'' he said.

Partizan captain Mladen Krstajic says the Serbians will be out to make a name for themselves across Europe with victory.

Veteran Krstajic, the 36-year-old defender, believes Alexander Stanojevic's well-drilled team - who lost their first Group H fixture 1-0 at Shakhtar Donetsk - can produce a performance which would send shockwaves throughout the competition.

''Against Arsenal, we will need to give even more than we produced against Shakhtar,'' Krstajic told the UEFA Champions League Magazine Show.

''We can't afford to let our performance level drop, and I hope we will manage to achieve a result that will announce our name throughout Europe.''

Despite his bravado, Krstajic - who faced Shakhtar wearing a special mask to protect a broken nose - knows Arsenal will test Partizan's resolve, even with Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott missing.

''It is hard to say who their most dangerous player is,'' he said.

''Arsene Wenger has a number of good players around 20 years of age.

''I don't know what line-up they will put out, but all the players will be tough opponents.''

Defenders Ivan Stevanovic and Marko Jovanovic are available again after being suspended against Shakhtar, but right-back Alexander Miljkovic has an ankle injury.

Gunners face tough Group H encounter in Serbia

Arsenal travel to Partizan Belgrade in the UEFA Champions League looking to bounce back from their disappointing defeat to West Brom at the weekend.

The Gunners were on the end of a surprise 3-2 reverse at the hands of the Baggies in the Premier League on Saturday - their only loss of the campaign so far.

It was a stark reminder that despite a good start to the season, Arsenal still have their frailties, not least at the back and in goal.

Manager Arsene Wenger refused to point the finger at Manuel Almunia following his poor performance at the Emirates, but the French tactician has claimed that the long injury list at the club is no excuse for the defeat.

Wenger will want a response from his side as the trip to Serbia kicks off a difficult week for Arsenal, with a trip to Chelsea on Sunday to follow where their title credentials will be put under the microscope.

A good result against Partizan would serve to banish the Baggies blip, but Belgrade is no easy place to go and the home team need to get their European campaign up-and-running after an opening-day defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk.

While Partizan were struggling in Ukraine though, the Gunners were running riot against Braga - thrashing the Portuguese runners-up 6-0.

It was an imperious display that would no doubt have struck fear into all of Arsenal's Group H opponents, but expect the Belgrade outfit to put up a sterner test on their own turf.

Indeed, Wenger's men have lost their last three away games in the Champions League - going down 4-1 to Barcelona in the quarter-finals last term, following on from defeats to Porto and Olympiakos.

An even more daunting statistic is the fact that they have won just two of their last 10 matches away from home in the competition - excluding qualifying ties.

There could be a number of changes in the Arsenal ranks as Wenger looks to shuffle his pack after the West Brom loss, with one eye on the weekend's fixture at Stamford Bridge.

Team news

Captain Cesc Fabregas is still out, while goalkeeper Almunia is absent through injury - leaving the manager without the difficult task of deciding whether to drop him on merit.

Lukasz Fabianski is set to come in between the sticks, and all eyes will be on him like a hawk after he put in a poor show last time he was selected.

Thomas Vermaelen has been sidelined since early September with an Achilles problem, while Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott are not expected to make a comeback until mid-October.

Abou Diaby returned against the Baggies and could retain his place, while Jack Wilsheremay come into the starting line-up after coming on as a substitute on Saturday.

Nicklas Bendtner has not played since the World Cup with a groin injury while Aaron Ramsey and Emmanuel Frimpong are long-term absentees.

Partizan's 12-match winning run in the league came to an end on Friday with a 0-0 stalemate against FK Spartak Zlatibor Voda, but manager Aleksandar Stanojevic rested Mladen Krstajic, Marko Jovanovic and Radosav Petrovic.

Right-back Aleksandar Miljkovic has been ruled out of the Gunners game after picking up an ankle injury in training.

Meanwhile, Krstajic broke his nose earlier in the month and may continue to wear a protective face mask.

Tale of the game

These Premier League title rivals both returned Champions League wins on Tuesday – after suffering their first League defeats of the season. Chelsea won 2-0 against Marseille at Stamford Bridge, while Arsenal enjoyed an impressive 3-1 win in Belgrade, against Partizan.

Chelsea remain top, three points clear of Manchester United and four better off than Arsenal. After six games last season Chelsea had maximum points, but lost their seventh, at Wigan. This season, they stumbled in their sixth outing, at Manchester City last weekend. Arsenal’s 11-point haul is one fewer than at this stage last season.

Chelsea are still without Frank Lampard and test Salomon Kalou, Jose Bosingwa and Yossi Benayoun. But Didier Drogba, who served a ban against Marseille, is available to return to attack.

Arsenal are still missing Cesc Fabregas, Theo Walcott, Robin van Persie, Thomas Vermaelen, Aaron Ramsey and Emmanuel Frimpong, while Nicklas Bendtner is closing in on a return.

But Arsène Wenger must decide whether to recall goalkeeper Manuel Almunia, if he is fit. Almunia was at fault for two of the goals in the 3-2 loss against WBA but did save a penalty. Lukasz Fabianski replaced him in Belgrade and also saved a penalty. Wenger must also contemplate starting with precocious youngster Jack Wilshere, who also impressed in the Champions League outing.

In 18 Premier League visits to Stamford Bridge, Arsenal have won six, lost six and drawn six. And overall Arsenal have won 24 of their 73 visits. Chelsea have beaten Arsenal in their last three Premier League meetings.

Stat of the game: If Chelsea lost it will be the first time in 159 Premier League games that they will have lost successive games. The last occasion it happened was in May 2006 – when they had already confirmed the title.

The top-of-the-table Blues are looking to bounce back from their league loss at Manchester City which ended their perfect start to the term.

Chelsea did respond in Europe during midweek, although morale in their camp was dealt a blow following news of the passing away of manager Carlo Ancelotti's father.

The Italian coach will, however, be on the touchline for this weekend's crunch encounter.

All eyes will be on the performance of Didier Drogba, who has haunted Arsenal in the past with his incredible scoring record.

Drogba

Drogba, who was absent on Tuesday through suspension, has scored 12 goals in his last 10 appearances in all competitions against Arsenal.

But midfielder Frank Lampard will miss the fixture with a groin problem.

Lampard has recovered from hernia surgery but has since sustained a slight groin problem.

Chelsea are also without injured striker Salomon Kalou (thigh) and midfielder Yossi Benayoun (calf).

The Gunners, meanwhile, suffered a shock 3-2 home loss versus West Brom last weekend, but they did recover by seeing off Partizan Belgrade on Tuesday.

Fabregas
Arsenal boss Wenger's main concern is over the fitness of captain Cesc Fabregas, who is rated 50-50 to play due to hamstring trouble.

Wenger must also make a key call on his goalkeeper with Manuel Almunia's availability in doubt and Lukasz Fabianski pressing for another chance.

The clash will be a stringent test of Arsenal's title credentials, with Wenger eager to right a record that has seen his side only win two of their last 17 matches against Chelsea
