Tale of the game
Sunderland could give Asamoah Gyan his first start after the Ghana World Cup star scored after coming on at half-time against Wigan last weekend. With Lee Cattermole suspended after receiving his second red card of the season, against Wigan, Sunderland could switch to a 4-4-1-1 formation, with Gyan joining Darren Bent in attack.
But Sunderland are still without Fraizer Campbell, Craig Gordon, George McCartney and David Meyler.
Arsenal lost 1-0 at the Stadium of Light last season, their first loss at Sunderland in six visits. Darren Bent scored the only goal of the game, last November.
However, they return buoyed by Wednesday’s impressive 6-0 Champions League win over Sporting Braga, taking their goal tally, in five games, to 19 goals (and an average of 3.8 per game).
For last weekend’s 4-1 win over Bolton Arsene Wenger rested Emmanuel Eboué, Gael Clichy, Samir Nasri and Abou Diaby ahead of the Champions League but he should turn to a stronger outfit as the next game is in the Carling Cup, against Spurs next week, when he will field a more youthful side.
Thomas Vermaelen is unlikely to return while Abou Diaby is still out, alongside long-term absentees Theo Walcott, Robin van Persie and Aaron Ramsey. Nicklas Bendtner has only an outside chance of being available.
Arsene Wenger and Steve Bruce have come head to head on 17 occasions with the Frenchman winning 13 and drawing two while Arsenal, in those games, have scored 32 goals.
Last season: Sunderland 1 Arsenal 0, Arsenal 2 Sunderland 0.
Stat of the game: Arsenal have their best points return (10) from their opening four games since 2007.
Betting tip: Arsenal on a roll; try a 1-0 away win at 13-2. |
