Spanish Press: Cicinho Deal Is Off
Sources in Spain indicate that Real Madrid's right-back Cicinho will not be joining Roma as the Bernabeu club looks to retain the Brazilian...
"I'm off to Roma," said Cicinho less than 48 hours ago.
"Cicinho to pen a four year deal at Roma," agreed the Italian press yesterday.
And today? "Cicinho will stay at Real Madrid," at least according to the Spanish press.
Sources in the Spanish game claim that the Real Madrid hierarchy has now opted to keep the Brazilian right-back ahead of the new season.
Marca speculates that the club made the decision after Los Merengues shipped five goals at home to Sevilla in the Supercopa second leg (3-6 agg.)
The sports daily even claims that Roma representative Cristina Matzzoleni, who arrived in Madrid on Sunday with a view to completing the deal, left without even seeing Madrid director Pedrag Mijatovic, such was Madrid's reluctance to go ahead with the deal.
Instead, Mijatovic allegedly spoke with Ricardo Sarti, Cicinho's agent, to tell him that there would be no Roma deal as coach Bernd Schuster sees Cicinho as part of his plans.
But Roma representatives have not given up hope, and are looking to conclude a meeting with Madrid tomorrow to settle the issue once and for all.
Cicinho trained normally with the squad today ahead of Saturday's Liga curtain-raiser with Atletico Madrid.
The player, who started just 5 games last season, playing 364 minutes of league football, has previously said that he'd love to stay with Madrid if there is a place for him, but will leave if he's to merely warm the bench.
Now, his future hangs in the balance. There are ten days left in the transfer window, and if Real Madrid don't make any new signings, it could be that he stays.
