Returning to 3-4-3 for good?

I and many other Ajax fans will be hoping that Blind does stick to the 3-4-3 system in the future. The game against Roda was a total success. A 4-1 victory was priceless for an Ajax team who had failed to win their last 2 Dutch league matches.

I’m sure many football fans out there are asking, “Why do Ajax have to play 3-4-3? Isn’t 4-3-3 attacking enough?”. To the normal football fan they would appear to have a very valid point. But Ajax fans would be very quick to correct them in such a situation.

Firstly, it is tradition at Ajax that the club plays the 3-4-3 formation.

It is tradition that the club plays with a number 4 in front of the defence. He is the playmaker of the team and Ajax fans demand to see a player like this in their team. Ajax fans have grown to love players such as Koeman, Rijkaard and Blind who have played in the role in front of the defence before. Ajax fans love seeing the important passes from this position that create numerous opportunities for the team to score.

As well as a playmaker in front of the defence, Ajax fans also demand a player from midfield to support the strikers. He has to play no more than 10 metres away from the striker so he can receive any short passes back to him.

So Ajax need to play with 1 man in front of the defence and 1 man just behind the forwards. Therefore, they must play with 4 midfielders since 2 midfielders are needed to cover the central and wide positions in midfield.

In addition to the 4 midfielders Ajax must play with 3 defenders and 3 attackers. This is because Ajax and their fans demand a very wide style of play. Therefore, players are needed to play on the flanks in addition to one player covering the central position in defence and attack. In defence the wide defenders do play centrally though and only move wide when they are being attacked from wide positions.

As a result of the particular demands of Ajax’s style of play the only possible formation to suit this style is 3-4-3. That is why Ajax must play the 3-4-3 formation and not any other formation such as the evil 4-3-3.

Style of play is not the only reason why Ajax play 3-4-3 either. Although it is the main reason. The club’s youth teams all play the 3-4-3 system. That is why it seems a terrible waste when Ajax coaches such as Koeman and Blind decide to play 4-3-3. Most of the Ajax players came from the youth team and were all developed to play a 3-4-3 system. That is why Rafael van der Vaart wanted to leave Ajax. He wanted to play as the number 10 in the 3-4-3. However, Blind was intent on playing 4-3-3 which meant there was no room for a midfield player that could play in behind the strikers.

Finally, all of Ajax’s European trophies and a huge amount of their domestic trophies were won using the 3-4-3 formation. The formation has also stood the test of time. It was first successful in the 1960’s and won the European Cup as recently as 1995. It is still successful in the youth teams today. Blind recently showed against Roda that it is still successful today by winning 4-1 in a convincing footballing display.

For all of the above reasons Ajax must play 3-4-3 in the Ajax style of play.

The next question is will Blind continue to use 3-4-3 in the future? Yes and no.

No is 1 answer simply because he reverted back to 4-3-3 against Arsenal in the Champions League. Ajax lost 2-1 and I hope Blind has learnt his lesson.

An Arsenal fan that I know commented on a forum after the Ajax game and made a very interesting point. He said Ajax were restricted to a lot of long range shots. I was not surprised to hear this at all considering we were playing 4-3-3. In that 4-3-3 Ajax did not play with a player just in front of the midfield and they played with 3 out and out forwards. Therefore, there was no player in between the midfield and attack to link the play. Therefore, it is totally expected that the Ajax midfielders would end up trying to score by taking numerous long shots. Hopefully Blind will realise that 4-3-3 is not a solution for Ajax after witnessing the game against Arsenal.

Despite playing a 4-3-3 formation in the Arsenal match I believe that Blind will continue to try and play 3-4-3 in the future. I believe the Arsenal match was a one off because Blind did not feel his team were ready to play 3-4-3 yet. Blind has said in the past that his team will play 3-4-3 but that the team needs a lot of work before they will be able to successfully implement the 3-4-3 formation. That is fair enough I suppose and I can not really complain about that.

If the intent is there to play 3-4-3 in the near future then I am sure that Ajax fans will be more than happy to wait patiently before they see a return to the traditional Ajax style of play.
