Calcio Debate: Juventus Spending Spree Must Continue If They Want To Be Involved In The Scudetto Race
A triple swoop this week has taken the Bianconeri's total purchases this summer to five, but Goal.com's Kris Voakes believes more signings - and sales - are needed in Turin...

It’s just 53 days before the new Serie A season finally gets underway, and Juventus have this week been gearing up by accelerating their transfer campaign, adding Jorge Martinez, Leonardo Bonucci and Marco Motta to their ranks as they look to recover from their worst top flight finish in 48 years.
But, as I wrote back in May, there was always going to be a lot of work to do both on and off the pitch at Vinovo this summer and despite five promising acquisitions so far, there is still a hell of a lot of work for new boss Luigi Del Neri to do before league action restarts.
The former Sampdoria coach was brought in by his ex-Blucerchiati boss Giuseppe Marotta and new president Andrea Agnelli as the Bianconeri immediately set about fixing the major flaws in the boardroom which showed the club up as nothing short of a shambles last term.
Backroom and bench troubles addressed, the club has turned its attention to the playing field of late and has started snapping up players in the mould of Del Neri’s strict 4-4-2 philosophy. In have come right winger Simone Pepe from Udinese, back-up goalkeeper Marco Storari from Milan, attacker Martinez from Catania, Genoa’s former Bari loanee centre-back Bonucci and Udinese right-back Motta, who spent last season on loan with Roma.
Bonucci ¦ Excellent signing for Chiellini
This week’s triple signing has shown that the Old Lady really is moving in the right direction, with Martinez and Bonucci having come off the best season in their careers so far, whilst Motta is a clear talent who will slot into the full-back slot which has been a true Achilles heel since the Calciopoli days.
However, much more work needs to be done by Marotta and Del Neri, both in terms of incoming and outgoing deals. Because for as much as the new quintet all add value to the first team squad, there are still some true big-hitters needed to fill out the roster, whilst the amount of deadwood hanging around at Vinovo right now needs to be seriously addressed.
Only Fabio Cannavaro and Tiago Mendes have departed so far from the squad which failed so spectacularly to achieve goals commensurate to a club of Juve’s stature, or even those to which the likes of Palermo and Napoli aspire.
The futures of Felipe Melo, Fabio Grosso, Amauri, Diego and Sebastian Giovinco, amongst others, need to be sorted. The first four names have cost the club a lot of money and delivered little. There are also big doubts over the abilities of last summer’s Brazilian purchases to slip into the rigid system Del Neri is likely to employ. It could be real car crash stuff watching them try to fit in to such a set-up.
Giovinco meanwhile is a youngster of undoubted quality on the ball who has been given far too few opportunities to prove his worth as a No. 10 figure in the black and white. His only run of any length as a first team trequartista came while on loan at Empoli. And now he is likely to find himself back in the same position in which he found himself under Claudio Ranieri – he’ll likely either play on the left, or sit on the bench. A move away has been touted, and may be the best option for all involved.
Beyond those already mentioned it would also be fair to place question marks alongside the names of players such as Mauro Camoranesi, David Trezeguet, Jonathan Zebina, Christian Poulsen, Hasan Salihamidzic and Zdenek Grygera. All of them have contributed something to the cause in the past, but none of them are the type you would want to rely on for 38 games these days.
Motta ¦ A big step up on Zebina and Grygera
At this time, there are simply not enough top level players in this Bianconeri squad to confidently predict a return to the title race in 2010-11. Meaning further additions must be made to follow the signings already secured. There is still the need for a top class centre forward, a left back of some repute, a left winger and a barnstorming midfield player to go alongside Claudio Marchisio. Whilst some of the names mentioned above as potential departures could fill in those gaps, it would be a backward step to keep the status quo rather than take the opportunity to complete the kind of revolution that is truly needed at Vinovo.
So with the halfway point between last season and next season coming up this Wednesday, the half-term report on Juve’s summer spending would probably reflect that of many a schoolchild: Showing great improvement, but must try harder in order to reach full potential. |
