Exclusive: Discover the new features in Football Manager 2010 with our new daily blog
http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/ ... -article141113.html
Hello everyone, and welcome to the first Football Manager 2010 new features blog, with our friends at the Daily Mirror, Daily Record, and MirrorFootball.co.uk.
"It is an honour and a privilege to be able to provide the blogs via MirrorFootball this year“ it really is the perfect home for a game made by football fans by football fans.
Since their launch last month, I've been massively impressed not just by the news and articles, but also by the archive, which, if you haven't see it yet, can be viewed here.
For those of you who are unaware of the Football Manager series, Sports Interactive, and myself, here's a little bit of history.
Sports Interactive are a UK games development studio that have been releasing football management games since 1992. We started working on the Football Manager series with SEGA in 2004, and have released five games in the series so far (FM2010 will be our sixth) selling over 5million copies worldwide so far.
The premise of our games is to give you the chance to manage a football team, and do the things that a real life manager does, whether it be transfers, tactics, interacting with the players, sorting out training, press conferences, team talks, not going over budget, and, ultimately, winning the league. We all think that we can do better than our clubs real life manager - well, we give you the chance to find out! There are over 5,000 teams to play as from over 50 countries leagues so the choice and scope is huge.
One of the key parts of any football management game is the database, and ours is the largest in football, with over 390,000 players and staff from around the world independently rated in hundreds of different categories by people in local countries (we currently have more than 1,000 scouts around the world). We strive to model the whole football world as accurately as possible, and know that quite a few clubs around the world use as database, including Everton who officially use it as part of their scouting network.
Our database is well known for finding great young players before anyone outside their own club has heard of them, giving people who play our games a big advantage in football banter and talk, knowing of the likes of Messi, Ronaldo, Vela, Tevez, Terry and Lampard well before they were names on the back pages of every newspaper.
Each year we release a new version of the game to celebrate the new season, and each year we strive for more and more realism. The blogs over the next few weeks are going to go in-depth on what we've added and changed in the game this year, and why, and give you an insight into Football Manager 2010. Oh, and the chance to play a free half season demo of the game, with an exclusive version of the demo from this very website.
I should also introduce myself, I guess. My name is Miles Jacobson, and I'm studio director at Sports Interactive. I manage the team here (there are 60 of us full time working on the game, with over 50 head researchers, and various other consultants) and try and make sure all the bits fit together. Basically, if something is good, it's because we've got a great team here. If something is bad, blame me!
We actually made an initial announcement about the new game a couple of weeks ago, which some of you will have missed, so what I'm going to do today is recap on what has already been announced, and announce one other big new feature, which I'll then go into more detail on in a future blog.
All of the info is today's blog is pretty bitesize - the aim of the blogs is to go into lots of detail on how the new areas of the game work so that you're ready and prepared for when the game is launched at the end of October.
Actually, that's as good a starting point as any. Football Manager 2010 will be released on PC and Mac on October 30th, 2009. Its little brother, Football Manager Handheld 2010, will be released on PSP on the same date. I'll do a special blog about FMH at another time to go into the new features in there, but the majority of the blogs will be about the PC and Mac release.
Also, if you are new to the game and want to find out what has been in previous versions, then you can find out more info about it at www.footballmanager.com or our own SI website. There you'll find very busy forums where you'll find most people more than happy to answer whatever questions you may have, as well as demos of our previous games and information on our online game, Football Manager Live.
So, what have we already announced for Football Manager 2010? Here's the press release:
Football Manager™ 2010 for PC and Apple Macintosh, and Football Manager™ Handheld 2010 for Sony PSP will be released on October 30th.
Football Manager™ 2009 is the most successful in the Football Manager™ series to date, clocking up 22 weeks at No.1 in the UK (PC charts) and selling in excess of 1 million copies worldwide, as well as being voted the 2nd best video game of all time in a recent Radio 1 poll.
According to data gathered from Football Manager 2009, people played the game for an average of 240 hours each and developer Sports Interactive has spent the last year working closely with consumers and the Football Manager community to implement key improvements to this year’s game.
Football Manager 2010 features new tools and changes across the board including some big additions to improve ease of use, navigation and feedback from the game with the introduction of a brand new match tactics system, the debut of a Match Analysis tool, a completely new look and new User Interface among other features.
"We have worked very hard with the Football Manager community to target not only the areas of the game that needed re-working but also what we could add to improve what’s already there. We’ve also conducted extensive usability studies which has led us to overhaul the whole presentation of the game, which we’re really excited about,” said Miles Jacobson, Studio Director at Sports Interactive.
“There has been a lot of polish to existing areas of the game but it’s also driven us to introduce changes to answer some of the feedback. We’re very confident that having done that we will deliver the very best Football Manager to date in October.”
The introduction of a Tactics Creator makes it easier to instruct the team to play the way the manager wants, alongside the introduction of touchline ‘shouts’ and quick tactic changes for instantly altering your team’s playing style during the match.
Working with coaches from various levels of football, alongside some of the Football Manager communities most respected independent tacticians, the game now has an extensive array of pre-set tactical options allowing the user to select a player’s role in the team (such as ‘Ball winning midfielder’ or ‘Deep lying playmaker’), however the option to use the old ‘slider’ controls remains.
Feedback from matches has been improved to give the user better insight into where their team is going wrong, or right. A new Match Analysis tool lets players see where shots, passes, crosses, headers, tackles, fouls and interceptions have been made on the field for all players on the pitch. Managers can view this analysis both live in-game and post match, allowing them to pinpoint the strengths and weaknesses of both their team and their opponent’s and adjust their tactics accordingly.
Football Manager 2010 features a brand new User Interface, with a light and a dark skin to choose from as part of a vibrant new look and has undergone a complete navigational overhaul. The side bar navigation of previous years has been replaced by an intuitive tab system at the top of the screen, making Football Manager’s famed depth easier to navigate and will make the game more accessible to new players.
A brand new Data Editor will allow the addition of new divisions to existing leagues and of entirely new leagues as well as making it easier than ever to keep the game up to date, and do so for free.
The delivery of information to the manager has been refined with users now able to sign up to the News Centre, an in-game subscription based newspaper that lets you get the news that you want about the football world and filter out the stories that you do not need, making the football world as immersive as you want it to be.
Following the debut of a 3D match view in Football Manager 2009, this year’s release sees a revamp with improved AI, over 100 new animations for the 3D pitch view, new stadiums, crowds, realistic pitch degradation and better lighting, creating an even more realistic match experience.”
Sounds good so far? Now, for those of you who knew about those features already, something new.
NEW FEATURE: Backroom advice
The backroom advice screen is an area where you can get regular feedback from your backroom staff to get advice on every area of the running of the team, from tactics, player interaction, advice on signings and scouting.
But I'm not going to say too much about it today, as the whole blog tomorrow will be about this new section of the game. However, there's a screenshot at the top of the page (click the full screen view icon to study it in-depth) for you as a taster for that tomorrow!
And another little exclusive here and now about the game - last year when we announced the new features, we did so via a video that was put together, which included some famous fans of the game talking about it. One of those people was Jon McClure from Revered and the Makers, and he recently became the first person outside of Sports Interactive, SEGA and our test teams to see the game when he visited our studio. Below is a new video of Jon just after he'd seen the game for the first time!
That's all for now - see you tomorrow for the backroom advice blog. |
