Chelsea capture Zhirkov
Russian clinches move to Stamford Bridge
Chelsea have completed the signing of Russian wing-back Yuri Zhirkov from CSKA Moscow.
The left-sided player, who shot to prominence with his performances at Euro 2008, has long been linked with a move to one of Europe's top clubs.
Barcelona were understood to be interested earlier in the summer before Chelsea emerged as the front-runners for his signature.
He flew in to London over the weekend to undergo a medical, later stating that it would be 'inexcusable' for him to let such an opportunity pass.
New manager Carlo Ancelotti has now confirmed the switch, with the 25-year-old becoming Chelsea's third signing of the window.
Speaking at his first press conference, Ancelotti said: "Zhirkov, Sturridge - these are Chelsea players."
Daniel Sturridge joined the Blues from Manchester City last week, while young goalkeeper Ross Turnbull also arrived from Middlesbrough. |
