Totti ready for Azzurri return Saturday 12 July, 2008
Francesco Totti has sensationally left the door open for a return to the Italy squad following Marcello Lippi’s appointment.
The 2006 World Cup winner took a year’s Sabbatical from the Azzurri after that tournament and then announced his decision to retire from international duty because of fitness concerns.
However, Lippi said in his first Press conference that he would open the door for Totti and Alessandro Nesta to go back.
“Lippi said something that I think was right,” commented Totti on Sky Italia television.
“I have a great rapport of mutual respect with him, both on the field and off, which is why we often speak on the phone.
“Now that he is the new Italy Coach, he will be the one to evaluate the situation. I have never discussed it with him, so we will mull over it later on.”
Totti can be in no rush for an Azzurri return, as he is focused on recovering from a torn anterior cruciate knee ligament.
“My latest check-up confirmed I am doing well. I have missed the ball, but for the past two or three weeks I have been playing with it on the sly. I even tried kicking and the knee reacted well.
“I have always said I’ll be back for the Italian Super Cup with Inter on August 24 and I hope that will be the case, although the important thing is to return when I am totally ready.”
There can be no doubts over Il Capitano’s commitment to Roma, as he prepares to put pen to paper on his final contract.
“It’s as if I have already signed, as I spoke to the President a long time ago. He always said I’d be here for life and I think very soon I will sign a lifetime contract,” smiled the homegrown talent.
“My current deal expires in 2010, so unless they want to kick me out…”
