Man City seek guidance on Jo move
Jo could be joined at City by fellow Brazilian Ronaldinho
Manchester City have contacted the Premier League over their interest in signing CSKA Moscow striker Jo.
City are close to agreeing a £18m deal for the 21-year-old Brazilian, who is advised by Kia Joorabchian.
"Jo is a player who interests us and we're currently in discussions with CSKA Moscow and his representatives," said chief executive Garry Cook.
"We're hopeful of progress and are keeping in contact with the Premier League," Cook told the City website.
"Manchester City is fully aware of the rules regarding third-party ownership of players and any transfers will be completed to Premier League regulations."
Premier League clubs recently ratified a new rule outlawing third-party ownership of players to avoid future controversies such as the Carlos Tevez saga.
In future, clubs will have to buy out all third-party owners so that they own players' registrations completely.
Joorabchian was involved in the Tevez controversy, following the Argentine's move to West Ham in August 2006, prior to his switch to Manchester United during the summer of 2007.
However a spokesman for Joorabchian insisted the issue of third-party ownership was not delaying Jo's transfer.
"CSKA Moscow have an agreement in place with his previous club Corinthians, who would collect a certain percentage of the sell-on fee.
"This is not, however, a third-party ownership. It's an arrangement between two clubs and is no different from any other deals which contain such clauses.
"The agreement was put in place when CSKA signed him from the Brazilian club which is contrary to some reports which have appeared elsewhere."
He added: "Kia fully understands the rules regarding third-party ownership and the issue is not holding up any possible transfer."
The Tevez saga began in April 2007 when his former club West Ham were fined for breaching Premier League rules over the signing of the striker and his Argentine team-mate Javier Mascherano in August 2006.
West Ham's response was to tear up an agreement they had with Joorabchian, who claimed to own the striker's economic rights.
But when it emerged Tevez wanted to join United, the Hammers, backed by the Premier League, insisted they should receive the transfer fee, prompting Joorabchian to take legal action.
Joorabchian eventually agreed to pay West Ham £2m to release Tevez from his contract, allowing the Argentine to join United on a similar deal to the one that took Mascherano to Liverpool in January 2007. |
