"Presstrial Stamp" is a sample instead of formal one, printed with trial model upon the design draft. The types of trial stamp include did-proof, master-die-proof, trial-colour-proof and plate-proof. "The Red Lantern" stamp belongs to the latter one.
The original painting of "The Red Lantern" presstrial sample is mainly from Beijign Opera with the same name, which was designed by Beijing Stamp Factory and trially printed on the printing machine called "Weifa Machine", assembled by Shanghai No. Three Printing Machinery Factory. The picture's area was 35x27.5 mm while that of the stamp 38.5x 31 mm. With 11.5-mm-Perforation, the none-gum package included 70 copy pieces (7x10), with "Trial sample of home-made stamp printing machine" in golden color printed on the surface. Shanghai No. Three Printing Machinery Factory, Shanghai Machinery Deisgn Institute and Beijing Stamp Factory all took part in the joint-trial-priniting.
It is said that after the trial printing, every worker of Shanghai No. Three Printing Machinery Factory got 3 copy pieces for memory. However, there soon came the order from senior authority to recall all the stamps. As a result, aournd 80% of these stamps were recalled and destoryed. The balanced 20% remained on the market. Since the "The Red Lantern" presstrial sample comprised 70 copy pieces every sheet(7x10), it is estimated that the amount of unrecalled stemps is 50 sheet (3500 copy pieces) or so. In that case, this presstrial sample becomes quite valuable for stamp fans.
