Attacking midfielder Geovanni arrived at City on a one-year Bosman deal in July 2007, becoming the first Brazilian to sign for the Blues.
Having started his career with Cruzeiro, Geovanni crossed the Atlantic to move to Barcelona in 2001 where he notched up 26 appearances in two seasons. Better was to come when moved to Benfica, initially on loan, but after impressing at the Stadium of Light the move became permanent. In three years in Portugal he made more than 90 starts and scored 17 times.
His most memorable moment came when he ghosted in between Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand to level the scores in a game that saw Manchester United dumped out of the 2005/06 Champions League.
Geovanni briefly moved back to Cruzeiro before returning to Europe, where City stole a march on Portsmouth by snapping the 27-year-old up just days after he had scored for Pompey in a pre-season friendly.
