West Ham To Joorabchian: Tevez All Yours For £6m
In a new twist to the Carlos Tevez dispute, West Ham United have reportedly made Kia Joorabchian an interesting offer....
According to The Sun newspaper, West Ham have told Iranian businessman Kia Joorabchian - who claims to own the economic rights of Carlos Tevez - that they can have the Argentime striker for £6 million.
Such a deal might unblock the logjam that is preventing the player signing for Manchester United - but whether or not Joorabchian will be interested in paying out rather than receiving money for Tevez is another matter.
West Ham's "offer" is based on the minimum fee that the Premier League insist the Hammers must be paid for Tevez’s registration.
Resolving the dispute in this way seems unlikely to appeal to Joorabchian, however. He looks set to reject West Ham’s proposal and proceed with his High Court action against the Hammers.
Such a course of action is unlikely to be concluded quickly, and while the case wends its weary way through the legal machinery, Manchester United's hopes of having the player in their squad and available for selection by the time the transfer window closes on 31st August will look increasingly forlorn.
The Premier League have told the Hammers’ lawyers that if the club sell Tevez for less than £5.5 million it will trigger fresh disciplinary charges.
That figure represents the sum that West Ham were fined by the League for breaking their rules over third-party ownership.
However, Joorabchian claims that West Ham should only receive the £100,000 stipulated in his original deal.
But that deal was unilaterally torn up by West Ham and declared illegal by the League.
Tevez is under contract to West Ham until 2010. The Hammers now also hold his player registration.
But Joorabchian owns his economic rights and insists that he, not the Hammers, is entitled to any transfer fee.
He and his MSI company are suing West Ham for breach of contract, and go to the High Court tomorrow.
Nevertheless, West Ham's chairman, Eggert Magnusson, is still hopeful that a deal can be struck this week that is acceptable to all parties and enables Tevez to realise his ambition of joining United.
While legal action proceeds, Tevez is in limbo - and if the case rumbles on beyond the end of August, Tevez will remain in limbo until the transfer market reopens in January. |
