Yau’s丘成桐treatment of the Chinese academic establishment and of Tian 田刚may be harsh, but he explained his reasons. Insuring that Yau would be recognized as Chern’s successor was not one of them. Yet, NG have decided to juice up their story by headlining this chapter by asserting that that’s Yau’s real motive.
First, a dose of reality check is in order here. Anyone making comparison of Yau’s and Tian’s mathematical achievements and statures would likely be laughed out of room. Everyone (except perhaps NG) anywhere in the world, friends or foes, know that Yau is several orders of magnitude above Tian. Now if insuring his supremacy in China was Yau’s true motive, as NG asserted, then Yau must be totally unaware that he was already well-known to be far above Tian. For otherwise, why would Yau feel so threatened that he had to viciously attack Tian, as NG claimed? The New Yorker reporters were certainly entitled to believe their own fairy tale, but for them to put it in print and tout it as serious reporting seemed bizarre, to say the least. |
