Sven-Goran Eriksson's Notts County have signed Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel from Manchester City for an undisclosed fee that is understood to have broken the club's transfer record.
The 22-year-old - son of former Manchester United star Peter Schmeichel - played seven Premier League matches for City under Magpies director of football Eriksson in the 2007-08 season and has moved to Meadow Lane for a fee believed to eclipse the £685,000 paid to buy Tony Agana from Sheffield United in 1991.
Manager Ian McParland told the club website: "We're very pleased that Kasper has chosen to come to Meadow Lane. He is a significant part of the jigsaw puzzle we're trying to complete before the transfer window closes.
"We look forward to strengthening the team further in the next couple of weeks."
Schmeichel added: "I am very happy to sign with a club with such a long and rich history and such great support. I am joining a very ambitious team which is building for the future and it is a very exciting time for us.
"I'm looking forward to working with Ian and the rest of the lads, settling in and getting on with the season."
Schmeichel joined City in November 2004 spent time on loan at Cardiff and Coventry.
While widely expected to leave Eastlands after falling behind Shay Given, Stuart Taylor and Joe Hart in the pecking order, a three-division drop to League Two was not on the cards.
