BARCELONA: Liverpool's Craig Bellamy and John-Arne Riise put a week of controversy behind them when they grabbed the goals that earned a 2-1 comeback win over European champions Barcelona at the Nou Camp.
It was Barca's first home defeat in Europe since April 2003 when they lost to Juventus in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and only their second loss in 20 matches in the competition in the last two seasons.
A dominant Barcelona appeared to be heading for an easy win when they took the lead in the 14th minute after Portugal midfielder Deco steered a header in at the far post after a fine cross from right back Gianluca Zambrotta.
But Wales striker Bellamy, who faces a $156,000 fine for an altercation with Riise in a pre-match training camp in Portugal, equalised two minutes before the break when he powered a diving header towards Barca keeper Victor Valdes who stumbled back over his own line.
Barca continued to control the game but Riise snatched the winner 16 minutes from time when he blasted a shot high into the net after some dreadful defending by the home side.
PORTO: A 16th minute goal from Andriy Shevchenko allowed Chelsea to snatch a 1-1 draw from manager Jose Mourinho's former club Porto in their Champions League first knockout round first leg yesterday.
The Ukraine striker equalised with his 58th European club competition goal, four minutes after midfielder Raul Meireles had put the Portuguese league leaders ahead. Chelsea lost inspirational captain John Terry to a twisted ankle in the eighth minute.
MILAN: Valencia struck two equalisers from outside the box to shock Inter Milan with a 2-2 draw in the first leg of their first knockout round tie at San Siro.
Midfielder Esteban Cambiasso headed Inter in front just before the half hour but Valencia equalised with a superb free kick by David Villa, who curled the ball round the wall and in from 25 metres in the 64th minute.
With 14 minutes to go, right back Maicon put Inter back in front when he exchanged passes with substitute striker Julio Cruz and hit a fine low shot.
Valencia had the last word, though, when midfield David Silva struck a sweet low shot from the left past the diving Julio Cesar in the Inter goal.
