It's not easy to make something out of it and find a sure recipe for each situation, but every litlle thing that you learn is good.
For example, notice how the AI seems to sometimes balance the game in the second half, after being completely dominated in the first one. This will happen after it changes from defensive to normal in most cases.

Coman, that is what I think SI-games called the AI cracking tactics - if the computer finds itself being under pressure (i.e not accomplishing much), it changes something. Mentality for sure and maybe even other settings.
I don't believe in any other form of tactic cracking. The whole belief in it is (imo) a 'superstition' developed by people using inconsistent tactics experiencing a change of luck.

The key to handling the AI with it's changes in settings is by doing the same! Once you are under pressure, not achieving a single shot in say 20 minutes, change something. It works miracles quite often. So when JLa changes to offensive the last 15 minutes and sees it working - it might not be just because it is offensive, just changing something might give you a boost. To be able to select initial mentality after opposition, and more importantly change when needed, you need to have tactics that work well with different mentalities.

Which leads to the topic of the day, how to make sure your tactics are good with several mentalities. Which of course means you need to benchmark them with both normal and attacking (and preferably defensive setting as well), and select tactic after those results. Which might not be so easy after all.

Here is a puzzle for you folks. This weekend I did some tactic benchmarking using my man city benchmark. The purpose was to develop something resembling of a 5-4-1 that can score a lot of goals for Derby in the challenges (AJ! Your fault I am doing this!). After some benchmarking, I have (among others) these two candidate tactics to choose from, with the following benchmark results:

Code:

If I had to chose one of those, which one should I use, and why? :-)

ps: I am assuming you all are benchmarking and are able to evaluate benchmark runs without me explaining the basics? :ds
