The ban has been repeatedly appealed in the past, with Gurpegi claiming, along with evidence found by a Spanish university, that his body produces nandrolone naturally, but the appeals were in vain as he eventually was forced to serve his ban, who runs until the 10th May 2008. Athletic Bilbao, however, have neither released the player nor taken his number from the official squad.
He is also known for a famous match against FC Barcelona when he got in the spotlight for the wrong reason: Ronaldinho, without dropping the ball on the grass, swung it three times over his head, driving the crowd to delight.
