When Liverpool swooped to sign Chris Kirkland for a British transfer fee record for a goalkeeper in a deal worth £6 million at the end of August 2001 fans around the country were licking there lips at the prospect of the then 20 year old
Leicester-born Kirkland was a product of Coventry's famous Youth Academy. The 22-year-old impressed when now one else was during the Sky Blues relegation season in 2000 and has since been touted as a future England number one, Sven has checked our Kirkland several times but with David James and Paul Robinson blocking his way he finds himself in the same situation as he does at Liverpool. The magnificent form of Polands Jerzy Dudek has meant that Kirkland's first team chances at Liverpool were limited, indeed he only played in four games during his first season, but his performance away to Galatasaray in the Champions League was highly impressive and one of his most memorable.
His opportunity arose during the 2002/03 campaign following a sting of errors by Dudek in December 2002, in the midst of Liverpool's incredible run of poor form. Kirkland seized his chance and played regularly for a number of games until he was ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. A clash with Crystal Palace striker Dele Adebola during the FA Cup fourth-round tie at Selhurst Park ended his season and put his England hopes on hold.
On CM Kirkland is pure class full stop. At the start he has got all the reflexes and save handling of a 30 year old. Its in a few years were Kirkie makes the step up from great goalkeeper to world class goalkeeper. With David Seamen and David James nearing the end of there careers Sven Goran Eriksson already has a ready made replacement. If you can get him to fulfill the potential in your team then you have one hell of a keeper on your hands.
