United sign Australian nine-year-old wonderkid

Manchester United have signed a nine-year-old Australian wonderkid who is tipped to be as good as Wayne Rooney.

Brisbane-born Rhain Davis was snapped up by the Premiership champions after his grandfather sent a DVD of the youngster in action to Old Trafford.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was impressed enough to invite Davis, who holds a UK passport through his mother Leah, to move to England and train with the club.

Rhain and his father Mark moved to Cheshire, close to United and #39;s training base, last month and will soon be joined by the rest of his family.

United striker Rooney is regarded as one of the best players in the world, but Rhain already shows enough promise to suggest he could emulate the England star and #39;s success.

To do so Rhain will first have to earn a full-time scholarship with United, which is awarded to promising 12-year-olds.

United were quick to insist they were within their rights to sign Davis at such a young age.

A statement from the club said: "Manchester United signs up to 30 boys aged nine for the under-10s of its academy in line with the rules that govern Premier League academies.

"The club has at all times conducted itself in accordance with academy rules.

"All academy students operate under the same conditions and the same discipline and application is expected of them.

"Manchester United is proud of its history of developing talented young players and invests considerable time and resources in trying to find the best young players of the future."

£12M JUST FOR A RESERVE

FOOTBALL SPY EXCLUSIVE That's what Liverpool tell City they want for No.2 keeper Carson

Liverpool have told Manchester City they want a staggering British record £12million for RESERVE keeper Scott Carson.

In another indication of the money madness gripping the Premier League this summer, the Anfield club slapped the astonishing price tag on Carson yesterday as Sven Goran Eriksson made a bid to sign him - either for a fee or on loan - in time to play against West Ham in the opening game on Saturday.

Carson is Eriksson's top target. City have tried to negotiate a move for the past few weeks without any joy - and they have been left reeling by the latest valuation.

Even the cost of a loan fee for a year is massive, believed to be around £2.5million in rental alone - with Carson's wages on top. Liverpool's £12m rating of Carson - back from a year on loan at Charlton and now an England squad man - is £3million more than the biggest British fee for a keeper, paid by Sunderland this week for Craig Gordon from Hearts.

Carson will be stunned to find out his price. He is already concerned about his future as he will be restricted to a few games behind Rafa Benitez's first choice, Jose Reina.

The big keeper knows that a season in the shadows would cost him his place in the England squad for the European Championship.

Villa Turn To Carson  Aston Villa have turned their attentions to signing England goalkeeper Scott Carson on loan from Liverpool having missed out on Scottish keeper Craig Gordon.

Gordon elected to join Sunderland for a transfer record of £9m yesterday leaving Villa boss Martin O'Neill short on time to sign a keeper before the season starts.

O'Neill lost first choice Thomas Sorensen to injury during pre-season and seems not to have sufficient faith in his understudy Scott Taylor, although he may find competition for Carson from Manchester City.

Carson, who spent last season on loan with Charlton, was due to be Liverpool's number two behind Jose Reina this season, but the players England ambitions have forced Reina to allow him to make another move on loan.

Liverpool are now set to sign Charles Itandje from Lens as his replacement and if the transfer goes through Carson will be allowed to make the move to Villa, although will not be available for the club's first match of the Premiership season.

Manchester City may yet make their move as Sven-Goran Eriksson knows of Carson's qualities from their time together in the England squad, but it is less likely that the Swede will be able to convince Carson he'll be his first choice for the duration of the coming season
