Image of China slips in global survey

Public attitudes toward China are turning more negative in the United States, Europe and elsewhere amid unease about its economic and military power, an international survey suggests.

"The image of China has slipped significantly among the publics of other major nations," said the 2007 Pew Global Attitudes Survey.

Feelings have deteriorated in the United States, Britain, Japan, India and Germany, though China generally is viewed favourably, due largely to its contribution to economic growth, according to the survey.

The exception to the downturn was Africa, where China is expanding commercial ties and has pledged several billion dollars in aid. Large majorities in all but one of 10 African countries surveyed see China and its growing economic and military power positively.

The survey was based on telephone or face-to-face interviews between early April and late May in 45 countries, according to Pew.

Sample sizes ranged from about 500 in Kuwait and Italy and about 1,000 in Russia, Egypt and Brazil to 2,000 in the United States and 3,000 in China. Margins of error ranged from 2 to 4 per cent.

In the United States, the percentage of respondents with a favourable view of China fell from 52 per cent last year to 42 per cent this year, the survey found.

In Japan, 29 per cent of people surveyed viewed China favourably, down from 55 per cent in 2002.

The trend was stark in Europe, where the share of Germans responding who view China positively slid from 56 per cent in 2006 to 34 per cent this year, the survey found. Similar declines were reported in Spain, Britain and France.

"To some extent, this reflects the widespread view that China's growing economic power has a positive effect on respondents' countries, especially in the developing world," the survey said.

"However, there is broad concern about China's growing military power," it said.

"Concerns about China's military are especially deep in Europe, Japan and South Korea."

China's military power was viewed as a "bad thing" by 89 per cent of people surveyed in South Korea, 84 per cent in France and 80 per cent in Japan, according to Pew.

China's other Asian neighbours viewed it positively, with favourable opinions expressed by 83 per cent of Malaysians, 79 per cent of Pakistanis and 74 per cent of Bangladeshis, the survey found.

In Africa, attitudes toward China were overwhelmingly positive, with majorities in all 10 countries surveyed describing Chinese influence as more positive than that of the United States.

China is in the midst of a campaign to expand commercial and political ties with Africa, and this week launched a $US1 billion ($A1.2 billion) fund to finance investment and trade by Chinese companies there.

"China is almost universally viewed as having a more beneficial impact on African countries than does the United States," the survey said.

"Clear majorities say America's influence in their countries is generally good. But the perception that China has a positive impact is far more widespread."
